It’s true that technology has made our lives easier in many ways, but being addicted to technology could really have some serious negative effects on children.

We already know that it is not good for kids. We really should limit the use of iPads and electronic devises or they get hooked and addicted from a very young age. Now let’s talk about our addiction to social media. How many times a day do you check your phone? I check all the time! And we really do not have the need to do it. We should reflect on that. I think we are becoming addicted, and that could take away quality time with our kids. Even worse, a new study shows it could affect them.

Did you know that checking your updates at the dinner table could be having a detrimental effect on your child, according to a study?

Yes. Researchers at Boston University studied 225 mothers and their 6-year-old children while they ate their evening meal. The study was published online in the journal Academic Pediatrics.

The study revealed that on average, moms who used their mobiles during the meal interacted with their children 39% less often and talked to them 20% less than the group who didn’t have access to their devices.

Researchers found the lack of interaction was particularly problematic when the meal included foods that were new to the child, as young children can find the introduction of new flavors and textures stressful.

This means that your addiction to social media could prevent your kids from being better eaters!

Moms who used their mobile devices interacted 48% less often when new foods were introduced, meaning children missed out on important support and encouragement.

The study also found that kids who come from families where dinner time involves a lively conversation around the table tend to have better vocabularies. Leave your electronic devises away from the table and you will be improving your kids’ language skills!

Instead of checking your phone, encourage your child to chat about their day as they eat. Get them interested in the conversation. Ask them what happened in school that was fun. What was the best and worst part of their day. Encourage a healthy conversation and learn more about your family!

Eat together as a family. Talk about your goals, your problems, your achievements. You will be amazed at all you can discover about your kids. Talk to them instead of checking your phone. Try it. I promise it will make you feel so much better. And your kids will thank you in the future.
