Teaching Kids Food Rewards Can Be Healthy And Delicious

I have been thinking a lot about this topic lately. Kids constantly hear about food rewards and it always means getting junk food. Why are we teaching our kids that junk food is actually a reward?

I have a 6 year old son and an almost 2 year old daughter. When my son was born with a rare birth defect, I started researching about nutrition and little by little, improved our diets. I wanted to keep my son healthy and strong. A healthy lifestyle made a huge difference in his development. Please read MY Story, for more details.

Yes, my kids eat candy and processed foods. Unfortunately, junk food is everywhere and I don’t believe I should be so restrictive. When we go out or they are at a party or gathering, they eat everything they want. At home it is a different story. We try to be as healthy as possible with our daily meals. I try to teach my kids that healthy food is really good for them and try to limit junk food as much as possible.

I want to teach my kids healthy eating habits. I want them to know what is good for their bodies and what causes harm. It is extremely important to me. This is why I try to reward them with something they enjoy without choosing junk food. You can learn more about it in my post 5 Tips For Raising Healthy Non-Picky Eaters.

I tell my kids that what comes from nature will make them strong. On the other hand, I tell them that food that comes from a box or a can is really not the best for them. We need to eat more food that comes from nature, and less “stuff” that comes from factories. I think it is our responsibility as adults and parents to offer them better choices.

A Local Organic Juice Bar

I discovered an awesome little organic juice bar close to our home. We go there every once in a while to celebrate having a great week, or when we feel we need a nice and tasty treat. My son now gets to make his own smoothie or juice and picks his favorite fruits and veggies. I love seeing him so excited to make a new combination each time and talking to the guy at the register so proud that he is able to order his own juice.

Looking at the video makes me realize how important it is to teach our kids healthy eating habits. You can see in the video how he saw lemons at the door and thought of incorporating them in his smoothie. You can see how your treat is done. You can pick real ingredients. The reward is full of goodness. To me, this is the best kind of reward.

My kids get so excited when I tell them we are going to get a smoothie or juice at this little local place. Seeing their happy faces makes me so proud. It makes me proud to teach them that rewards do not need to be candy. They do not need to contain artificial ingredients, chemicals, and lots of refined sugars to make them happy.

I also teach my kids that dessert or junk food is not actually a reward. I tell them healthy food is really a reward. Off course sometimes it just doesn’t work and my kids choose the junk food option, but this little success trip to get a juice gives me hope and makes me stay positive that I am going in the right direction. Teaching Kids Food Rewards Can Be Healthy And Delicious is so important.

Teaching Kids Food Rewards Can Be Healthy And Delicious

We are born with a palate for real healthy food. Unfortunately, today’s diet is full of processed junk food, and it is addictive. It really is. But we can change that by teaching our kids the difference. We can talk to them and explain why we want them to eat more real food and less processed stuff.

Healthy eating habits start at home. We can teach our kids to eat better and healthier by setting the example. Buy more fruits and veggies. Cook at home. Learn about nutrition and read labels. Less from the box and more from the earth.
